Ryan is an original character descended from an Old World lineage of werewolves that occasionally produces members who completely lose their minds, becoming ravening beasts in their wolf form and either near-catatonic or equally violent in human form. Ryan actually doesn't know that much about being a werewolf because it happened to his grandfather, and his father was raised as a human - but his family's "curse" also had a much more direct impact on him, when his older brother fell victim to it. The idea of the same thing happening to him freaked him out so much that he decided to die before he could find out what it was like to lose his mind and turn into a maneating monster.

Since then, he's always kept a small vial of wolfsbane tincture on him, just in case, but that's really his last choice for how to go out - he'd much rather die doing something awesome and/or useful, which was a big part of what led him to join the Marine Corps. In Iraq, he almost got his wish, when he took a piece of shrapnel from an IED through the neck. Even with his werewolf super healing powers, it took him nearly two years to fully recover.

During that time, he decided he'd be better off letting other paranormal entities take a crack at him instead. He wasn't about to join a PMC and work with worthless, civilian-raping assholes to get back to Iraq, and even if he could reenlist without his miraculous recovery turning more than a few heads, he didn't think he could handle what would happen if he didn't quite die again. Instead, he became a hunter, in hopes of coming up against something powerful enough to kill him, and he found that the work agrees pretty well with him. He gets to travel, and see the country, and most importantly, he doesn't have to get too close to anyone, so there won't be anyone around to save him when he finally finds out too late that he's in over his head.
